The Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority is asking people what they think about its new proposals for MPs allowances and expenses. It’s a well turned set of questions.
I have bunged in my thoughts, which boil down to "Don’t be Too Bossy" – weed out the obvious sources of banal but large abuse under the current untransparent arrangements, then leave a lot of flexibility.
If an MP wants to employ a family member, why not, as long as that person does the job?
If within a total overall ceiling an MP wants to move money between different budget subheads, why not?
Plus a lot of issues can be solved using new technology, such as iPhone apps.
Here is one which lets the public see what MPs are up to. A simple app such as Anishu’s excellent BizExpense will do everything an MP needs to keep everything neat and tidy and transparent.
In the end (and from the start too), it is better to empower voters than empower the IPSA.
